See the website for the Chapter Summary and Expectations at http://wps.ablongman.com/ab_henslin_sociology_8/43/11210/2869813.cw/index.html.
For sure culture defines society in many ways. These ways generally break down to material and non-material elements. For example, kimchi and chung respectively would be those. Culture does create some fascinating issues for us, though, especially when we get into such things as "subcultures".
Activity: Introduction to culture
For this activity. The first thing you are to do is generate a list of words that come to mind when you think of the work "culture". Produce at least 10 items.
Be prepared to link those words to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Be sure to note that on your first class next week there will be a quiz on Chapter One (Tuesday or Wednesday).
Please read pp. 35-48 (up to "Many Cultural Worlds"). Take notes on all the vocabulary items.

Class debate:
Take a side on the question below.
Some people believe that some cultures are superior to others. They take a very ethnocentric perspective when they take this perspective. Still others contend that no culture can ever be superior to others. This view supports a view that embraces cultural relativism.
Be it resolved that one culture can be considered superior to another?
